Philippians 4:7 (NIV): “And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
From the first time I read this verse years ago, it struck me as something I wanted my life to be like…and though I am still a work in progress, my life mirrors this verse far more than it did even 5 years ago. If it resonates with you, as it does for me, here are some tips to start getting there:
-Limit social media. There can be NO peace in your life if you desperately need to get validation from others. Posting every good thing that happens to you and spouting your opinions on things on social media can NOT coincide with a peaceful life.
-Glean the news only…don’t take what you read as gospel-compare it to what you know and like the above tip, spend as little time as you can listening or reading the “news”. Put more faith in what you see than in what you read. The government says inflation is going down, I say go to a restaurant or the grocery store-you can’t sell me that bill of goods. I get my bullet points quickly, put them against my worldview, and then move on basing my decisions on what I see…not what the news tells me. Believing the news will keep you angry and on edge-the opposite of peace!
-Don’t worry about others- Everywhere you look, if you want to, you can find people doing things wrong. It is especially painful when it is people we love. But don’t worry about that spec in their eye, worry about the plank in yours. I can only control myself. You’ll have no peace picking at others….work on yourself and have grace for the rest.
-Be real. Don’t try to hide your flaws and put on a mask-this is the biggest disrupter of peace in people’s lives. Open up on your flaws to those closest to you-your inner circle-(not the crowds on Facebook) and get into real relationships with healthy people where there is mutual respect and accountability. SOOO much better than trying to be something you are not.
-Serve Serve others. Join a civic organization like Rotary, serve in a local ministry, and give love everywhere that you can. You can’t be depressed serving in a soup kitchen.
There are plenty of other tips, but these are a great starting point. We weren’t born to live in constant fear and anxiety…we were born to thrive. The world in 2024 is going to try HARD to keep you on edge, angry, and not at peace. You will have to FIGHT for your peace in your life. But it has always been that way, peace comes at a price. Always has, and always will.
Have a blessed week!!!!!!
